“August, Mr. August” – 2026

Once again this year, the traditional “AUGUST, Mr. AUGUST” event was held with great success. Organized by the Theologos-Potou “HATZIGIORGIS” Cultural Association, it revives a beautiful custom that takes us back to a time when people lived in perfect harmony with nature and honored the changing seasons and the fruits of the earth.

At the end of July, our ancestors celebrated the conclusion of the grain harvest and welcomed with confidence the new season of abundance, fruits, and bounties. That same spirit was revived this year in historic Theologos, where numerous residents and visitors from Greece and abroad gathered for a festival featuring exquisite delicacies, traditional sweets, live music, plenty of good cheer, and lots of dancing to celebrate the end of July and the beginning of August together, thereby keeping our region’s traditions alive.

A special highlight of the evening was the revival of the time-honored custom of the bonfires. The young visitors had the opportunity to jump over the flames, as tradition dictates, symbolizing purification and the welcoming of the new season with health, strength, and happiness.

The association’s president, Giannis Karantelos, gave a welcome speech, while the cultural association’s dance troupe set the rhythm of the evening to the sounds of the band, sweeping young and old alike into an authentic traditional celebration.
The event was graced by the presence of Panagiotis Archontis, Deputy Regional President for Tourism of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace; Eleftherios Kyriakidis, Mayor of Thasos; the Deputy Mayor for Tourism, Giannis Markianos, the Deputy Mayor for Culture, Giorgos Koutsoumanis, and the Chairman of the Theologos Municipal Council, Kostas Sourinis.

The Theologos-Potou Cultural Association “HATZIGIORGIS” extends its heartfelt thanks to the Municipality of Thasos for providing the venue, to everyone who prepared the excellent appetizers and desserts, and to the volunteers whose selfless dedication played a crucial role in ensuring the event’s flawless execution.

A big thank you also goes to everyone who attended and filled Theologos Square with smiles, singing, and dancing, proving once again that tradition stays alive when we all work together to keep it alive.
