The historic path in a new light

Anyone setting out from the old stone bridge in Theologos and following the
path up towards the plane trees of Agios Ioannis is walking through a piece of
the village’s living history. Watermills, dry-stone terraces, shaded resting
places — much of it built up over generations. And much of it needs tending,
or it quietly disappears.

Over recent weeks, the Cultural Association of Theologos-Potos
“Chatzigiorgis” has given this stretch a thorough overhaul. The aim was to make
the path easy to walk, safe and well kept once more — for the people of the
village as much as for our visitors.

What was done

  • Clearing the route: Debris and overgrowth were removed
along the entire path and its surroundings, right up to the plane
    trees.
  • Dry-stone terraces: The old stone retaining walls
    alongside the path were repaired.
  • Woodwork: The wooden bridge and the resting benches
    have been renovated and repainted.
  • The old mill: The stone arch of the Riga watermill was
restored and the stone channel above it cleared.
  • Safe access: A rebuilt stairway now leads down to the
basins of Kefalogourna; new protective railings were installed and the
    existing ones serviced.

The stone arch of the Riga mill mattered to us in particular. Structures
like these tell of how the village once worked — and they vanish without a
sound when nobody looks after them.

Work that is never finished

Caring for the paths and natural places around Theologos is not a job you
complete once and tick off. Wind, rain and undergrowth reclaim whatever has
been won from them. That is why the association treats the upkeep of these
places as a standing commitment — so they stay usable and accessible, and the
way there stays safe.

If you would like to see the result: the path starts at the stone bridge.
Sturdy shoes are worth it — and so is the time to linger under the plane
trees.
