The Thasos Wedding is the leading and most iconic event of the Cultural Association of Theologos “Chatzigiorgis”.

On August 12, Theologos once again transforms into a living stage of tradition, hosting the 50th revival of the Thasos Wedding. For half a century, the Cultural Association has established, cultivated, and promoted this unique custom, passing it down from generation to generation.

The Thasos Wedding is not merely a theatrical performance or a reenactment of an old custom. It is a complex folk ritual through which the songs, dances, costumes, jewelry, mores, and customs of the place are preserved and revived.

The roots of the ritual acts that make up this event reach far back in time. Its unfolding resembles, in many respects, the structure of an ancient drama: distinct acts, distinct roles, music, dance, and a gradual crescendo leading to the great traditional feast.

The ceremony unfolds across different locations in Theologos, where the bride, the groom, and the best man (koumbaros) are found. Participants and visitors follow the course of the custom, as music and dance accompany each of its stages.

The climax comes with the great musical and dance procession through the streets of the village, to the sounds of the traditional Wedding March, leading to the great feast that follows.

The Thasos Wedding takes place every year in August, in Theologos, and is one of the most distinctive expressions of the local cultural heritage. Its uninterrupted revival over five decades has made it not only one of the most important cultural events on Thasos, but also a unique living testimony to Greek tradition.
