“August, Lord August”

A look back at the era “when the watermills were running”

The Cultural Association of Theologos “Chatzigiorgis” welcomes August with a special event dedicated to the traditions, flavors, and memories of another era.

In Theologos, the custom of celebrating the eve of the first day of August with the lighting of bonfires has been kept alive for many years. The celebration marks the passage from July, the “Reaper,” to August — a month traditionally associated with the abundance of fruits and produce.

“August, Lord August,

with figs, with walnuts,

and with red grapes,”

says the old folk couplet.

August was also the season when the flour mills were in full operation. Millers held an important place in the community’s daily life, as attested by the many songs and folk references from Theologos.

The present-day form of the celebration marks 18 years and continues an older custom that used to be revived every year, on the same day, in the neighborhoods of Theologos.

Today, the event serves as a broader look back at a world that many of us knew, or heard described by previous generations. A world of lush green gardens, fertile fields, and trees laden with fruit.

An era when people were closer to nature, and the concept of “we” held greater importance than “I”. People celebrated the seasons of the year, welcomed the new period, and bid farewell to the previous one, following the natural cycle of life and work.

Thus, on the last day of July, Theologos would bid farewell to the harvest season and welcome August — the month of the new harvest, of fruits and produce.

With songs, flavors, and memories, the celebration carries us back to the time when the watermills started turning for the milling, the millers sang, and the sound of water, millstones, and daily life filled the place.

The event also includes a tasting of local summer cuisine, showcasing flavors and products associated with August and the traditional life of Theologos.

An evening dedicated to the memory, tradition, nature, and flavors of a world that may be changing, but must not be forgotten.
