Watermills, dry-stone terraces, shaded resting<br \/>\nplaces \u2014 much of it built up over generations. And much of it needs tending,<br \/>\nor it quietly disappears.<\/p>\n<p>Over recent weeks, the Cultural Association of Theologos-Potos<br \/>\n&#8220;Chatzigiorgis&#8221; has given this stretch a thorough overhaul. The aim was to make<br \/>\nthe path easy to walk, safe and well kept once more \u2014 for the people of the<br \/>\nvillage as much as for our visitors.<\/p>\n<h3>What was done<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Clearing the route:<\/strong> Debris and overgrowth were removed<br \/>\n      along the entire path and its surroundings, right up to the plane<br \/>\n      trees.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dry-stone terraces:<\/strong> The old stone retaining walls<br \/>\n      alongside the path were repaired.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Woodwork:<\/strong> The wooden bridge and the resting benches<br \/>\n      have been renovated and repainted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The old mill:<\/strong> The stone arch of the Riga watermill was<br \/>\n      restored and the stone channel above it cleared.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Safe access:<\/strong> A rebuilt stairway now leads down to the<br \/>\n      basins of Kefalogourna; new protective railings were installed and the<br \/>\n      existing ones serviced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The stone arch of the Riga mill mattered to us in particular. Structures<br \/>\nlike these tell of how the village once worked \u2014 and they vanish without a<br \/>\nsound when nobody looks after them.<\/p>\n<h3>Work that is never finished<\/h3>\n<p>Caring for the paths and natural places around Theologos is not a job you<br \/>\ncomplete once and tick off. Wind, rain and undergrowth reclaim whatever has<br \/>\nbeen won from them. That is why the association treats the upkeep of these<br \/>\nplaces as a standing commitment \u2014 so they stay usable and accessible, and the<br \/>\nway there stays safe.<\/p>\n<p>If you would like to see the result: the path starts at the stone bridge.<br \/>\nSturdy shoes are worth it \u2014 and so is the time to linger under the plane<br \/>\ntrees.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone setting out from the old stone bridge in Theologos and following the path up towards the plane trees of Agios Ioannis is walking through a piece of the village&#8217;s living history.
